20 something years later and he’s Still HOT!
As I was sitting in my History of Western Civilizations class today, I heard another side of the story about Christopher Columbus’s expeditions to the New World that is often times just briefly touched, making this seem such an insignificant part of the story. My professor, however, greatly stressed how Columbus and his men (and soon Spain) treated the Arawak Indians. These Native Americans greeted Columbus with gifts when he first made it to shore on Hispaniola (which is now the Dominican Republic and Haiti) and Columbus thought of their generosity as them being naive people. He found many great resources that he wanted to take for Europe, the main resource being GOLD. And on his second expidition, that is what he came back for. But not just that. He also went to bring back some Arawaks as slaves.
On his second expidition, Columbus brought with him 17 ships!…Unlike the 3 measly ones he brought on his first trip that we all know of so well (the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria if you forgot). He and most of his men did many terrible things to the Arawak indians. [on a side note, a history on the term “indians.” the Indies meant unknown land, so indians meant the people of the unknown land.] they not only took Arawaks back to Europe to sell as slaves, but they also took many for pleasing themselves (sex that is), mostly with women and children, even boys.
That’s not the worst. The Arawaks began to say “no” to Columbus and his men when they demanded for things. This “rebelling” act would result in the native american to be speared with a sword and left to bleed to death.
Also in the two images above, which my professor showed and explained in class. the first is of the Arawaks being hung (but low enough where there toes could touch to the ground) and being burned alive at the same time. If that wasn’t disturbing and chilling enough, the men would simultaneously throw the Arawak’s children into the flames! If your stomache isn’t churning, then you must not be sane.
The second image. When the Arawaks were sold as slaves in Europe (if they even survived the boat ride over), they were given a copper neclace to wear. now if they were found without the neclace on, they would get hands and even ears chopped off on the spot!
I felt so much disgust and a GREAT loss of pride in my heritage and America. What do we truly stand for? We take away many Native American’s sacred lands and turned it into an industrial…waste land…seriously….we really are not the best country to look up to for anything anymore. I felt compelled to write about this because it has been on my mind alllll day, and i felt like telling someone. Read this and take away from it what you like…RESEARCH it for yourself! Just a little history that i felt is really worth mentioning.
